What are Glycerin Suppositories for Infants?

These glycerin suppositories are a treatment for constipation in infants. Glycerin suppositories are used to stimulate the emptying of the bowels and provide effective relief from constipation.

How should this medicine be used?

These glycerine suppositories are only suitable for use in infants below the age of 1 and should never be swallowed/taken by mouth. Wash your hands before use, then remove the protective film by tearing the strip at the notch, or by cutting around the suppository. After that, dip the suppository in water and insert it into the infant’s rectum. The recommended dosage is one suppository, to be used as required.

How does glycerol treat constipation in infants?

These suppositories contain 1g of the active ingredient glycerol. Glycerol is a compound with a wide range of uses but is most commonly found in constipation treatments. Glycerine suppositories relieve constipation by stimulating the bowel to encourage movement – this is done by pushing water into the intestines.

What causes constipation in infants?

Constipation is very common in infants, but it can be really uncomfortable for them and equally worrying for new parents. It’s usually short-term and easily treatable, and most of the time it isn’t something to worry about too much. Some common causes of constipation in infants may include:

  • Change in diet (taking formula for the first time, for example)

  • Dehydration

  • Lack of fibre

When should this medicine not be used?

You must not give these suppositories to your infant if they are allergic to any of the ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.

If you are unsure whether glycerine suppositories are suitable for your infant, be sure to speak to a doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist first.

These glycerine suppositories are only suitable for infants aged 1 or under – similar treatments for children and adults are available here.

Are there any side effects?

As with all medications, there is a possibility of unwanted side effects, but they won’t affect everyone. The known possible side effects of these glycerine suppositories include:

  • Bowel irritation

  • Abdominal cramps

If your infant experiences any side effects, including any that aren’t listed here or in the patient information leaflet, stop using glycerine suppositories and speak to a doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist. You can also report any side effects using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
