Mysimba Prolonged Release Tablets are a weight loss treatment that reduces your appetite and food cravings.

If you are an adult with a BMI of 30 or above, this could be the perfect way to help you kickstart your weight loss journey. Mysimba Prolonged Release Tablets may also be prescribed if you have a BMI between 27 and 30 and have weight-related health problems such as diabetes or high cholesterol.

How Mysimba Prolonged Release Tablets work

Mysimba Prolonged Release Tablets contain two active ingredients: 8mg of naltrexone hydrochloride and 90mg of bupropion hydrochloride.

The active ingredients work together to help reduce your appetite and food cravings. By suppressing your appetite, these tablets will help you to eat less food and consume fewer calories.

Directions

Always take Mysimba Prolonged Release Tablets exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you.

Your prescriber will decide the dose of your treatment. Usually, they will recommend the following doses, which increase weekly until you get to week 4:

• Week 1: 1 tablet a day, taken in the morning
• Week 2: 2 tablets a day, once in the morning and once in the evening
• Week 3: 3 tablets a day, 2 in the morning and 1 in the evening
• Week 4: 4 tablets a day, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening

Take your tablets with food, swallowing them whole with water. After 16 weeks, your prescriber will decide whether you will continue taking Mysimba. If you haven’t lost more than 5% of your starting weight, your treatment may be stopped.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Mysimba Prolonged Release Tablets may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Constipation
• Headaches
• Dizziness or vertigo
• Feeling shaky
• Difficulty sleeping
• Changes in the taste of food
• Dry mouth
• Difficulty concentrating
• Tiredness, sleepiness, drowsiness and lack of energy
• Ringing in the ears
• Fast and irregular heartbeat
• Hot flushes
• Increased blood pressure
• Pain in the abdomen
• Excessive sweating
• Itching and rashes
• Hair loss
• Irritability
• Feeling jittery

Serious side effects

Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.

You must stop taking Mysimba and contact your healthcare provider straight away if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

• Suicidal thoughts and feeling depressed
• Seizures
• Red, itchy spots that start on the limbs
• Bleeding in and around the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals
• Red, scaly rash with bumps under the skin and blisters accompanied by a fever
• Severe muscle cramps, muscle pain and muscle weakness
• Lupus skin rash or worsening of lupus symptoms
• Agitation, hallucinations, high body temperature, increased heart rate, an exaggeration of reflexes, muscular rigidity, lack of coordination and gastrointestinal symptoms

Warnings

Mysimba Prolonged Release Tablets may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if:

• You have abnormally high blood pressure that is not controlled by medication
• You have a condition that causes seizures or a history of seizures
• You have a brain tumour
• You are usually a heavy drinker and you have just stopped drinking alcohol
• You have recently stopped taking sedatives or medication to treat anxiety
• You have bipolar disorder
• You have or have had an eating disorder
• You are dependent on chronic opiates or opiate antagonists (or you are going through acute withdrawal)
• You have severe liver disease
• You have end-stage kidney disease

Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if:

• You feel depressed, have suicidal thoughts, have a history of panic attacks or any other mental health issues
• You have had a serious head injury or head trauma
• You regularly drink alcohol
• You are addicted to stimulating products
• You have diabetes
• You have high blood pressure
• You have uncontrolled coronary heart disease
• You have a condition that affects the circulation of blood in the brain
• You have liver problems
• You have kidney problems
• You have a history of mania
• You have Brugada syndrome

Mysimba contains lactose. Before taking this medication, tell your prescriber if you have been told you have an intolerance to certain sugars.

Using/taking other medicines

If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking these tablets.

Do not take Mysimba if you have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) in the last 14 days or if you are taking opiates and opiate-containing medication.

Mysimba may make digoxin less effective. If you are taking digoxin, you must tell your GP, as they may want to alter your digoxin dose.

You must tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medication:

• Medication for depression e.g. amitriptyline, desipramine, imipramine, venlafaxine, paroxetine, fluoxetine, citalopram and escitalopram
• Mediation for other mental health problems e.g. risperidone, haloperidol and thioridazine
• Mediation for high blood pressure e.g. metoprolol or clonidine
• Medication used to treat an irregular heart rhythm e.g. propafenone or flecainide
• Medication used to treat cancer e.g. cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide and tamoxifen
• Ticlopidine or clopidogrel (mainly used to treat heart disease or a stroke)
• Medication for Parkinson’s disease e.g. levodopa, amantadine or orphenadrine
• Steroids, including creams, lotions or inhalers
• Medication to prevent malaria
• Quinolones e.g. cirpofloxacine
• Medication used to treat HIV and AIDS e.g. ritonavir and efavirenz
• Medication used to treat epilepsy e.g. valproate, carbamazepine, phenytoin or phenobarbital
• Tramadol
• Theophylline
• Drowsy antihistamines e.g. chlorphenamine
• Medicines to lower sugar levels in your blood e.g. insulin, glyburide, glibenclamide, nateglinide and repaglinide

Age restrictions

This product is not suitable for anyone under 18 years old.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine. 

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol whilst you are taking Mysimba. 

Driving and operating machinery

Mysimba may make you feel dizzy or sleepy. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery until you feel safe enough to do so.

Storage information

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
